Suspension forks can carry bags too! This kit includes all the hardware needed to mount a pair of Pico Panniers
Our solution involves some stainless steel hose clamps with a welded tab and threaded rod, also known as the King Cage USB. We didn’t want this rod poking into the bag so we had custom barrel nuts machined with a low profile head. These nuts recess into the plastic frame and retain good thread engagement while still minimizing leverage stresses. They also use an 8mm hex head, which is common for bike parts.
We’re happy to discuss all the variations we’ve researched and developed, but that would make this description more of a dissertation. For now, just know that we’ve put this setup through the wringer and we promise it works well!
Parts List
(6) Universal Support Bolts by King Cage in 2” diameter
(6) custom barrel nuts with 8mm hex heads by Paragon Machine Works (M5 size, 303 stainless steel)
(6) small fender washers (M5 size, stainless steel)
(6) large fender washers (M6 size, stainless steel)
(1) roll Newbaum’s cloth tape to protect your fork from scratches
How-To
Loosely attach plastic frame to clamps - assemble from inside to outside (clamp, small washer, plastic frame, large washer, nut)
Make sure the hose clamp tightening screws are towards the rear so you can reach them later
Note that the driveside clamp bands are going to be higher than the non-driveside in order for the nuts to be at the same height
On the drive side, the nuts are below the bands - on the non drive side, the nuts are above the bands
Wrap your fork legs with cloth tape to protect it - cut the roll in half first and make sure the total height and position is correct for all six clamps
Use the assembly from step 1 to determine the correct position
Attach clamps to fork legs and align the plastic frames properly
